Body-camera footage released by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) on Friday reveals the moments leading up to officers fatally shooting an Islamic State-inspired attacker who killed 14 people in a truck rampage on New Year’s Day.

The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, opened fire on officers from inside his truck after crashing into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street. The footage shows Jabbar shooting from behind an airbag as several officers surrounded his vehicle.

During a press conference, NOPD officials confirmed that three officers discharged their weapons after Jabbar fired at them. The video depicts one of two officers standing near the driver’s door with his gun raised. A muzzle flash is seen from inside the truck, followed by a rapid succession of shots.

As Jabbar fires at officers from close range, some can be seen diving for cover. Police confirmed that two officers standing by the driver’s door discharged their weapons, while a third officer positioned in front of the truck, unseen in the footage, also fired.

NOPD officials declined to disclose how many shots Jabbar fired, citing the ongoing investigation and potential litigation.

The incident followed Jabbar’s deadly rampage on New Year’s Day, in which he drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people and injuring others. Authorities have described the attack as being inspired by the Islamic State group.

The released footage provides insight into the intense and chaotic moments faced by officers attempting to neutralize the threat. The investigation remains ongoing.
